Senilna makularna degeneracija je bolest koja napada središnji dio mrežnice i dovodi do pada kvalitete života bolesnika jer nisu više u mogućnosti sami voziti, prepoznavati lica, čitati. Degenerativne promjene dešavaju se u centralnom djelu mrežnice - makuli, dok je etiologija još nepoznata. Postoje dvije forme oboljenja: suhi ili atrofični, te vlažni i li eksudativni oblik. Komunikacija je ključni element u pružanju visokokvalitetnih zdravstvenih usluga. Medicinske sestre moraju biti fokusirane na rušenje predrasuda o nemoći slijepih osoba i poticati njihovu samostalnost te stvoriti okruženje u kojim će se oni osjećati sigurno. Educirane medicinske sestre znaju kako pružiti zdravstvene usluge i na koji način pristupiti slijepoj osobi koristeći pomagala te educirajući slijepu osobu o uporabi istih. Ne može se dovoljno naglasiti potpora koju je potrebno pružiti osobama koje gube ili su izgubile svoj vid. Senile macular degeneration is a disease that attacks the central part of the retina and leads to a decline in the quality of life of patients because they are no longer able to drive on their own, recognize faces, read. Degenerative changes occur in the central part of the retina - the macula, while the etiology is still unknown. There are two forms of the disease: dry or atrophic, and wet or exudative form. Communication is a key element in providing high quality health services. Nurses must be focused on breaking down prejudices about the helplessness of blind people and fostering their independence and creating an environment in which they will feel safe. Educated nurses know how to provide health services and how to approach a blind person using aids and educating the blind person about their use. Not enough emphasis can be placed on the support that needs to be provided to people who are losing or have lost their sight.
