Historically, skiing and tynzey (lasso) throwing have constituted a significant part of everyday life for Komi-Izhemtsy. Gradually, they have been evolving into professional and amateur sports. The story of Izhma sportsmen is considered as one of the most successful in crosscountry skiing and national sports2 . Drawing on the historical roots of traditional Komi sports, the article discuss the role of skiing and national sports in community development in Izhma region.
