He was a marine engineer in the merchant navy and became a fitter and turner from the late 1950s at the Tramways Workshop in Brisbane where he became involved in labour politics as a union activist. At the Tramways workshop he formed the Tramways Photographic Club, and began taking photographs for the Queensland Guardian, documenting street protests and May Day processions in Brisbane.
