Vlk obecný (Canis lupus) je historicky nejrozšířenější šelmou, jehož původní areál zahrnoval většinu severní polokoule. Ambivalentní vztahy člověka k tomuto predátorovi vyústily na jednu stranu ve vyhubení tohoto druhu na velké části jeho areálu, ne druhou stranu vedly k evoluci psa, unikátního domestikanta s obrovskou fenotypovou variabilitou. Snahy ochranářské biologie v posledních desetiletích vedly ke změně vnímání role velkých šelem v ekosystémech, v jejichž důsledku vlk rekolonizuje mnoho oblastí, z nichž byl vytlačen, včetně České republiky. To sebou nese zvýšení zájmu o tento taxon mezi odbornou i laickou veřejností. Předkládaná literární rešerše má za cíl shromáždit publikované literární údaje týkající se distribuce, fylogeografie, populační struktury, sociálního a prostorového chování vlka obecného. Součástí jsou i kapitoly o domestikaci psa a jeho hybridizaci s jeho divokým předkem. Gray wolf (Canis lupus), is historicaly the most widespread carnivore with the former range including most of the northern hemisphere. The ambivalent relationship of humans to this predator resulted in extermination of this species in many areas, on the other hand led to the evolution of the dog, unique domesticant with vast phenotypic variation. The effort of conservation biology in last decades resulted in the shift of perception the role of big carnivores in ecosystems, with consequent recolonization of many regions by wolf, including the Czech republic. This changes brings the elevation of interest in this taxon by both experts and laymans. Present review aims to assemble published information regarding distribution, phylogeography, population structure, social and spatial behaviour of the gray wolf.
