A Holistic Approach for Artificial Lighting at a Human Scale: Analysis of Visual and Non-visual Stimuli in Indoor Exhibition Spaces and Development of Technical Solutions
The development of this thesis arises from the evident need of a re-thinking process of the artificial light’s role within the built environment. As people are constantly and increasingly exposed to artificial electric light, it is fundamentally important to evaluate its impact in specific applicati...

Tests have been done in the Natural History Museum of Calci and in the National Museum of San Matteo in Pisa (Italy). The working experience of the author in a leading lighting fixture’s manufacturing company (Zumtobel Lighting) has further enhanced the quality of this study in terms of technological knowledge and development. A new full-spectrum LED has been conceptualized and developed. Analysis of the impact of this new technology are still running in the form of research studies, collaborating with University of Naples (Italy) and Reykjavik University (Iceland). The final goal of this work is to increase the industry awareness on the potentials of properly designed light (artificial and natural) in supporting people’s life. Furthermore, the hope is to stimulate the interests for further studies and research on the effects of artificial light on humans and, as a consequence, an even more advanced development of lighting technologies, to support the constantly increasing lack of natural daylight in people’s life.
