Falco subbuteo Hobby

Much new information on density, nest spacing, survival, food, nest-site selection, and breeding success is presented. Most information is yielded by intensive studies conducted in Great Britain, France, Netherlands, Germany, and Italy. Density was 0.5-29 pairs/100 km 2, usually 1-5 pairs/100 km 2....

Most information is yielded by intensive studies conducted in Great Britain, France, Netherlands, Germany, and Italy. Density was 0.5-29 pairs/100 km 2, usually 1-5 pairs/100 km 2. Mean nest spacing ranged from 1.5 to 8.8 km. Additional data from intensive studies on nest defence and association with Woodpigeons Columba palumbus are also reported. Overall population trend in the western Palearctic is very unclear and characterized by wide and unsynchronized fluctuations, probably related to complex local interaction of food and nest availability, land-use changes, weather, and Goshawk Accipiter gentilis predation. Much information is still needed on home-range size, post-fledging dependence period, and factors limiting numbers. Intensive studies in winter quarters are also needed.
