International audience The authors of this book reflect on the relationship between minorities and museums. While the notion of “minorities” is obviously ambiguous, it is deliberately used here to highlight the marginalization of groups confined to the margins of history. The desire to be represented in museums has never been so strong: there is a strong social demand to make visible the experiences of the colonized, of enslavement or of any other minority position. For a long time, American, Canadian and French museums claimed universal aesthetic and cultural authority, basing their approach on the idea that objects concealed their own meaning, outside their production context. Today, this notion is being called into question within the very institutions, along with the expographic practices it has generated.Drawing on case studies from both sides of the Atlantic, researchers in the human sciences and museum professionals compare the mutations of expographic doctrines and practices with minority mobilizations. If Greek tragedy offered a form of social catharsis, museums now seem to be assuming a share of it. Les auteurs de cet ouvrage conduisent une réflexion sur les relations entretenues entre les minorités et les musées. Si la notion de « minorités » est évidemment ambiguë, elle est ici utilisée à dessein pour souligner la mise à l’écart de groupes cantonnés aux marges de l'histoire. Le désir d’être représenté au musée n’a jamais été aussi vif : une importante demande sociale s’exprime, pour rendre visible les expériences des colonisés, de la réduction en esclavage ou de toute autre position minoritaire. Longtemps, les musées états-uniens, canadiens et français ont revendiqué une autorité esthétique et culturelle universelle et fondé leur approche sur l’idée que les objets recelaient leur propre sens, en dehors de leur contexte de production.
