La «Saga di Eirik il Rosso» («Eiríks saga rauða») appartiene al gruppo delle “Family Sagas” ("Íslendinga sögur") dell’antica letteratura islandese. Essa si configura come un testo di straordinario interesse storico e antropologico perché contiene una delle più antiche narrazioni della penetrazione dei Vichinghi, prima in Groenlandia e poi nel Nuovo Continente (la cosiddetta Vinlandia), circa 500 anni prima della “scoperta” dell’America da parte di Cristoforo Colombo. Ma è anche un testo ricco di suggestioni che afferiscono alle dimensioni del magico, del meraviglioso, dell’immaginario, e insieme un’opera nella quale la “frontiera” geografica si fonde e si confonde – nella redazione scritta che di essa ci è pervenuta – con le “frontiere” mentali dettate dalla visione religiosa e dalla fede cristiana dell’anonimo redattore. In questo intervento si passano in rassegna e si analizzano alcuni episodi della saga, cercando di mettere in evidenza tali aspetti del testo islandese, anche in riferimento alla precedente e coeva letteratura latina medievale. The «Saga of Eirik the Red» («Eiríks saga rauða») belongs to the group of “Family Sagas” ("Íslendinga sögur") of ancient Icelandic literature. It is configured as a text of extraordinary historical and anthropological interest because it contains one of the oldest narratives of the penetration of the Vikings, first in Greenland and then in the New Continent (the so-called Vinland), about 500 years before the “discovery” of America by Christopher Columbus. But it is also a text full of suggestions that refer to the dimensions of the magical, the marvelous, the imaginary, and at the same time a work in which the geographical “border” merges – in the written version of it arrived – with the mental “borders” dictated by the religious vision and the Christian faith of the anonymous writer.
