July 9th. Three miles to Lake Merced, fine ride. Camp basin filled up above lake and separated by grand rock dam over which the river pours in magnificent cascades. Took party of girls there. Found bright glacial polish far and near, burning in setting sunbeams. Very fertile P. contorta, covered with scarlet flowers. The male mostly empty of pollen. July 10th. A good many went to Lake Washburn, some turned back by slippery rock. Two bridges required. My cabin still there. Fifteen set out for Ritter. July 11th. Very tall concolor, 200 feet (?). Strawberries in flower. A few ripe lower on dry ground. Mr. Agneous found young fawn. Interesting to see universal sympathy it excited when brought into camp. July 12th. Start up McClure Fork for Tuolumne Meads, 18 miles. Fine views. The trail follows east side of fork to divide there and down Rafferty Creek to Tuolumne. Lots of hemlock and cataracts. The west fork making fine display sweeping around large dome. Much snow on summit, 3 miles of it mostly on Rafferty side. Lake half frozen, arctic looking. A misleading trail leads to right from summit down Ireland Creek. July 13th. All tired, resting and soda drinking, washing. July 14th. Went to lower meadow rock, gathered polished crystals. One of best views of meadow, and Dana Gully, etc. The lower end of mead from about Lambert Dome, once a lake. Wrote to Helen. Very bright red Orthocarpus just in flower. Cassiope and Bryanthus in bloom by river bridge. Some two-leaved pine still in flower. July 15th. Up to Glacier Lake and glacier meadow where camped 40 years ago. The trees buried somewhat and stream banks broken, the grasses and gentians etc., will not be in bloom until next month. July 16th. Walked and talked with Mr. Thatcher. Lectured in evening. July 17th. Ladies’ night. Very interesting. Bagpipes, Highland Fling, Witch broth, etc. July 18th. Fine walk to Virginia Creek crossing. Very fine view from lower end of meadow. The river, the mead, the mountains-Unicorn, Cathedral, Monument, etc. Great displays of bare ...
