All John Muir Journals John Muir journals drawings writings travel journaling naturalist text 1907 ftunivpacificmsl 2023-05-06T22:35:10Z hunt was going on the young beggar watched every motion as if taking lessons in the seem-ingly dangerous work, but never entered the water, only flew from rock to rock amid the foaming roaring cataract to be near when its mother appeared who ran forward & popped the food quickly into its mouth & instantly vanished in the swirls & silvery current for more – had [flown] near river, some 10 or 12 mouthfuls delivered in about 15 or 20 minutes Noticed a good many lowland spermophiles [burrowing rodents] at nearly 8000 ft el [elevation]. The lower part of the canon v.[very] narrow for a mile or 2 at mouth The eroding force checked consid-erably in [thrusting snout] into the [mark] Kern trunk gl [glacier]. A large part of current of these tributaries compelled to overflow & sweep across the ridges wh [which] formed their bank So with many of these narrow-throated tributaries of the Kern along both sides Mr Elison Berkeley prof [professor] walked from here to top of [Kaweah] pk [peak] & back in one day of moderate length spending 1½ hrs on top 17 One of the Whitney party got back here in time for breakfast – a doz [dozen] or more in time for lunch. Fast work I feel better today after yesterdays climb. The exercise of mind & limbs beneficial & bringing back lang syne wanderings Glad have not lost cunning as mtneer [mountaineer] tho great speed has gone with years 18th Washed & read & sauntered The last of the Whitney climbers got into camp here in the afternoon. All got to top but 2, well pleased & exhilarated with trip, All specially admired junction [ ] Some never noticed the Balfour pine forests passed thro [through]. Told stories, much talking, slight thunder shower PM, [ ] 19 Small sermon by Mr Palmer at 9 a.m. Many smaller & some longer by self. One on the silver bow of Alaska at camp fire, but the fine celestial story tho [although] told in this grand Sierra temple & devoutly heard & listened to seemed to make but little impression of a durable kind Trashy joke ...
