The [Indian] visited a camp ground 500 [yards] below ours and returned with a chip, a bone and a few hairs, which he offered as proof that Indians had killed a bear and camped there 8 days ago. We asked him the day we left the ship. At this camp the [Sitka] [spruce] form a [considerable] part of forest with the P hemlock still predominant and taller,-100 [feet]. A fine mill established old, mossy, lichened, and if possible still more superbly embossed with Cassiope, etc. (29) The ship’s whistle awoke us.
