Dwarf cornel huckleberry etc in flr[flower]. White flrd[flowered] rubus chaaemorus. Cranberry glossy lvs[leaves] Charming pink flrs[flowers]. Sedges [seaweeds] tall rye. Magnif[icent] boulders capped with 2 or 3 feet of hummus with rich growth of vacciniums & seedling hemlock & spruce. Cornel [Drawing: boulders with plants and trees on top] [Keiker] of Hot Springs murdered mother deer & threw her over ridge pole of [ ]. Caught her pitiful baby fawn & tied it beneath its dead mother 17. Fine day - did some shopping Then went to the woods & bogs. The spruce now in flower. Very beautiful. The difference in size considerable. Some pist[illum] flrs[flowers] 1½ in long Some green Some quite red stand upright. Very hopeful & rich looking. Whole trees covered with them - determined to stand up straight - thus [Drawing: branch and cones] Thought the cones are pendant when full grown, I suppose from weight. The staminate cones Coptis. Rubus chamaemorus & [ ] & small purp[le] ribes, strawberry etc in flr[flower] - met a lot of people on the street from the Topeka Prof[essor] Moses among the rest I had to talk to them. [Miss Briggs] Huckleberry, Kalmia, & sp[ecies] of Cassiope? in flr. Streptopus dryas 18 Rainy.
