June 10. 1899. from island in mid[dle] of main N W Division on peni[nsula] Charpentier x low islet o dead ice 12th Jun All the day bright pure sunshine Everybody sunburned. Saw bergs discharged from Hugh & Carpentier [Charpentier] but [camp] feeble. Beautiful branches & [flrs]. The outlet of Hugh near mouth of Reid Inlet very beautiful a mile of mud flat in fiord a cascading trib[utary] on W[est] near mouth. Surface of main v[ery] smooth & white. Fine view from here of Carroll v[ery] much [cresented] like Muir 2 or 3 ms[miles] in front broad spreading right & left. Were [baffled] trying to cross to E[ast] side of R.[Reid] Inlet Had to return & camp here. Charming willows Silky lvs[leaves] & red stamens. Lovely red pink bells [urns] of margarita.
