Eagles crows junco warblers etc 6 Arrived at Juneau about 9 A.M. Stayed ½ hr. Mailed letter to home. Went to Douglass City visited mines. In stamp mills could not hear myself shout At mine saw many big blasts go off. A large concern but simply many smaller mills in one. Ore shot down shaft & loaded into cars & hauled to mill. Put through crusher [ ] into [pieces] size of 2 to 2½ or 3 inch On the N. side of the Juneau channel trees grow up to near 3000 ft. On S. being in shade snow lies longer preventing tree growth mostly above 1000. & [Cirques] keep trees off their paths. This side gree[n] with grass & alders willow & perhaps birch Fine view of Auk [or] Mendenhall Gl[acier]. No change apparent from ship. Eagle Gl[acier] very striking. Lofty [fins] Heads of mtns[mountains] veiled in filmy clds[clouds] greatly enhancing the beauty & grandeur. Lynn Canal [sun] in clear cloudy weather, always beautiful.
