Pistillum smaller but brilliant [ ] [of] crimson. 3/16 dia[meter] ¼ inch long- cheering the Alaska bogs in co[ncert] with Andromeda polifolia. Coptis The pure white rubus Chamaenorus Huckleberry. Kalmia glauca etc Buckbean 2 Sp[ecies] one with fringed petals (S menyanthes trifoliate) in bogs & pools the other with round lvs[leaves] - Contorta quite ab[undant] in boggy ground. When not choked by Menzies Sp. Merten Hemlock Thuya gigantea & Cupressus Nootkatinsis both of which are here Common. Andromeda pale pink bells lovely- Huckleberry showy 5 Arrived Wrangell at 1130 PM yesterday. Got up at 5 this morning Went ashore. Walked outskirts of woods. P[icea] sitchensis in flr[flower] yel[low] & red inside 1 in l[1 inch long]. Very handsome growing bolt upright like Abies buds just opening brown cap of scales coming off. Needles yel[low] like flrs[flowers] exceedingly rich. Growing all around & [ ] up like abies magnifica. P[icea] silkensis Measured log at mill 100 ft long 2 ft 1 inch dia & 3ft-8 in dia inside bark straight as arrow. Age 168 yrs Linnaea bir[ch] ab[undant] at Wrangell. Streptopus etc. Menziesia Had fine view of mtns[mountains] after passing thro[ugh] Wrangal [Wrangell] Narrows Devils Thumb very striking inaccessible 9000 ft h[igh]. Actual pyramid 1600 ft h.
