The old scrawny, branches v crooked, palmate when young in sheltered spots, but branchlets few and open drooping at ends, pea green, 2 cassiopes at feet. Aug 15. Glorious sunset, orange yel blue, bronze, mtn islands dark blue and fold beyond fold paler and paler and finer blue. Mt. Baker seen from rr and all the way nearly Victoria. Arrive about 8:15. [Aug] 16th. Visited J.R. Anderson, Dept. of Agricultre. Drove with him in the P.M. into woods and farms. Saw juniper trees about 1f dia 20 high. [Aug] 17th . Canby and Sargent to the lake ½ way to Nansimo botanizing; I trying to write. Get reply to telegram from home; Helen has whopping-cough, so I guess have I. Get long telegram from Examiner. [August] 18th.
