Sep. 16. Mild, half clear. Temp. 53. Coaling at St. Michaels. Now seeming homeward bound, it is trying to stop here. Sep. 17. Bade friends, the trades, and wives goodbye. Examined the lava bluff below the Indian village. Found it composed of black cinders roughly stratified, and scarce at all cohering. At the water-line there is a stratum of compact gray sandstone with fragments of trachyte, etc., then the black cinders, next a stratum 8 – 10 ft. in thickness of compact lava with mud and tundra vegetation. Noticed gray muddy water issuing in several places from base of the bluff, with cracks on top of tundra and a vegetation similar to that on Elephant Point, indicating ice beneath the tundra.
