The sloping ground above it sent down glacial mud upon its surface, filling up crevasses and hollows over which mosses and lichens began to grow out, which eventually formed so thick a felt covering as to prevent waste, keep it permanently frozen, and thus it has lasted until now, wasting only on the exposed face fronting the estuary, the material of the tundra being precipitated over the ice-cliff and washed away.
