took a long sharp spear, tied their handsome moccasins firmly about the instep and ankle and away they went after the flock, bounding along from rock to rock over moraine and up stream bank, and heading steadily across bits of mossy tundra and meadow along the edge of a stream that flowed down the middle of the valley at the head of which they said the deer were feeding. The gait of these young Tchuchis was admirably lithe and graceful and strong, with small feet and ankles which their tight pants and firmly tied moccasins showed to fine advantage. They seemed to speed over the ground as easily as trained racers glorying in their strength, with long heaving, swinging strides that they meant to keep up. We watched them through the glasses until they were three miles away, during which time they had not broken their speed for a moment.
