Left St. Michaels, having on board provisions for 9 mos. About 100 tons of coal. Decks heavily piled. A weird red sunset; land mirage into most grotesque forms. Heavy smoke from the burning tundra S.W. from St. Michael. The season’s cruise seems now to be just beginning. July 10. Arrived this morning about seven o’clock in Golovin Bay and dropped anchor. There is heavy sea and a stick S. wind, with clouds veiling the summits down to 1000ft. from sea level. I was put ashore on the right side of the bay after breakfast at a small Indian village of two huts made of driftwood. A few Indians came off in canoes, very fine ones, slightly different of a pattern from any others I have seen. There is a round hole through the front end to facilitate lifting.
