The cows in summer are driven to the high pastures & kept there for three or four mos [months] by the girls. who make the milk into butter & cheese. In conducting the cows to these high pastures they are oftentimes carried on boats along the fiords. Potato patches often are only a square rod in size on hillsides among rocks. Barley fields no larger. ripe now. Some seem almost on edge. hanging among the rocks. fringed with flowers, bluebells daisies Lychens Epilopbium raspberry huckleberry heather etc. Deep beds of peat or shallow very common on uplands 2000 ft [feet] or so. in which the 85 trunks & stumps of trees abound showing that these boggy spots have been forested A few orchids in bogs & vaccinium heath etc on drier spots & rocks. The people are slowgoing heavy looking & contented. The down hanging edge of a large glacier is seen in many places on the Har- [Hardanger] F [Fjord] said to be 25 ms [miles] long by 15 wide. Some of the lowest descend by portions in canons have separate names. The best known & visited is the [ ] gl [glacier] above Odde [Odda] 3 or 4 miles on W [west] side of canon. Have to cross the beautiful Buar [Buer] lake to reach it.
