Description
Summary:38 on this island. The circum [circumference] of island about 7 miles. Arrived at camp about midnight. Tired & cold. Crossing the inlet with sail in cranky rotten boat through icebergs dangerous. Was glad to get to land once more. July 3d Fine day. Ascended the yellow rib of the mtn [mountain] on E [east] side of inlet wh [which] [forms] the principal portion of E [east] wall of inlet to observe marked points on ice for motion of the gl [glacier]. July 4th ascended the above named mtn [mountain] to summit by the northmost ravine next to yellow ridge. Had good climbing along bottom of ravine with plenty of water 39 & snow, about a mile of snow in upper portion of ravine, & patches on summit & slopes near summit. A few of those patches lie so long -- probably all the yr [year] in some places the ground beneath them is plantless. Noticed Cassiope under edges of some. What look like thin green lingering growths of moss from sealevel are composed of shaggy rich growth of Cassiope bryanthus -- white flrd [flowered]. Vaccinium dwarf with bright flrs [flowers] pink. Saxifrage a few grasses Anemones. blue bells gentians small Erigeron. pedicularis. dwarf willow etc. Of these far the most influential & beautiful is the [heathwort] Cassiope tetragone.
