Keen-eyed & courageous, self-reliant, a stubborn skeptic, would not believe even in gls [glacies]. His definition of a gl, "a big mtn all covered with ice." Then a river said I would be a big mtn all covered with water. Told him what a gl was & succeeded in exciting his interest. Told him he must reform for a man who neither believed in God or Glaciers must be the most wicked & dangerous of all unbelievers. "None of the Priests can bulldoze me" he said. Found Mr. Loomis at Port Townsend. [Sailed] from [here] this eve on [Queen.] Touched again at Victoria. Walked up town for breakfast. The vegetation lovely especially the larger wild rose by the wayside & spiruea & the honey suckle of gardens. Gl action 5 visible everywhere. Sailed for Alaska June 18. at 10:30 A.M. Weather cloudy rainy. Saw P.B. [Cornwall] on Puebla. Offered to employ me to descend Mt. Baker & Bellingham Bay [refuse] He is interested in Coal Mining Cloudy all way to Fort Wrangle, lost time with slight difficulties with engine. Scenery delightful even in dull weather. The marvelous wealth of forests,islands, waterfalls. Clouds wreathing the heights gently. Many ava [avalanche] slopes & slips. The [tones] of [sky] delicious in pearl grays, browns of woods, purple edgings of clds mist fringes endless combinations of water & land. ever shifting. Not interesting to most tourists.
