PICKARD,49 R.F.D. 12,CUPERTINO, CAL.July 22nd 1909Mr. John MuirDear Sir:Since becoming a resident of California I have hoped that our paths might cross each other and that I might meet you tho you may have forgotten me in the years that have passed since you were a student in the University of Wisconsin.I have not forgotten you and have followed your course with great interest as of one of the leading scientists of the country.Since I left Madison in 1864 I have spent fourteen years in045482.Superintendency of Public Schools in Chicago, Eleven years in State University of Iowa nine years as President.While in the University I became deeply interested in Mr. Frank Russell one of our brightest students who spent two years in exploration of the [N.?] Arctic regions. He constantly reminded me of your early days in that same region, and in his [Service?] devotion to Scientific pre[illegible]suits. Unfortunately his constitution could not withstand the exposure to which he was subjected and after a few years work in Harvard University the end of what gave promise of a brilliant career came suddenly.045483Since my wife passed away I have spent my time with my daughter on a fruit ranch in Cupertino Canta Clara County.In my 86th year I am enjoying a quiet life for the little time remaining to me.It would give me pleasure to know that you remember me altho you knew more of my brother who was a Professor in Wisconsin University when you were a student there.With most pleasant memories of yourself in your student days and of your scientific & literary work in later yearsYour sincere friendJ.
