Love to all.AffectionatelyMother[1]Portage Oct. 23d 1890Dear Danl & EmmaIt seems so long since I have had news from any of you, I thought I must write to inquire about you all, I hope you are all well, and I expect the Baby Boy is thriving nicely. Joanna is still with us they spent two months in the country and the children were much benefitted by the change. Walter is still in Philadelphia and engaged there as much as ever. [2]I am sorry to know that John Reid and Mary! are having such hard times in Kansas. I am told that many of the farmers about there are leaving their farms and going elsewhere. Letters from Carrie & Anne Muir tells us that they all like living in Dakota, but they are not yet sure that Peirre will be the capitol of the state but that will very soon be decided now. Business seems to move on in Portage as usual although some think there is a falling off.[3]David and Ette are well, they have given up housekeeping but they still have rooms in their own house I expect John has got home from his trip to Alaska, he has got a wood house made near the 'Muir Glacier' with a hollow rock for a chimney and while he was there a part of gentlemen from the east arrived and they told him they had brought instruments with them to measure the Glacier, perhaps you have seen this measurement of it in the newspapers.
