Snow in patches.] came aboard, smoked, took a drink and told stories in [Captain’s] cabin. Was introduced and had talk on whaling. Said plenty of whales about the mouth of Mackenzie. Did not expect any near the strait. One said he got 25 last [year]. Wintered back of Hersohel Island. West [East] far as mouth of coppermine, could have gone home he thought by Baffin’s [Bay], thus making [Northwest] passage easier than [Westward]. They outfit in Port Clarence, coal, etc. in Port Clarence and go around Pt. Barrow about 1st of [August]. About 15 oomiak loads of Eskimo came alongside, 15 to 30 in each, besides babies and dogs, provisions, skiis, etc., a merry gypsy crowd. Very fine walrus and sealskin canoes propelled by oars, [paddles] and sails, extremely buoyant and fast sailers. Lively trading at big competitive prices. $3. for pair of walrus tusks, 4 for deer hides, 2 for boots, 1 for bit of carved ivory, etc. Dr. Merriam got inflated saddle back seals old and young. We went to [North] shore to get water.
