Shimagin group The day has been perfectly bright and cloudless; the sunshine falling in dazzling brightness on the deep blue water, spangles flashing, and on the wonderfully peaked and notched mountains of the coast (immediate) and the broad solid white glacier-laden volcanic cones and [mountains] behind the nearly snowless richly sculptured and composed ranges of the coast. A truly marvelous [mountain] range. One of the volcanic [mountains] was in sight most of the way from Kodiak to Nyak and most all this day. It must be about 10 to 12000 [Sketch: 4 peaked [mountain] next [South] of Augustine [Island]] feet [high], is very broad, laden with immense snows and ice fields and was spouting up a white cloud of steam 300 [feet] [high] on the [North][east] side about 3000 [feet] below the summit. One of the craters of a raggedly fluted sturdy gnarled cone about 5000 [feet] high was very striking.
