After supper called on Mrs. Washburn, Mrs. White and Mrs. Fisher. Had pleasant call. Mrs. White handsome and Mrs. Washburn appreciative and bright. Had pretty rooms. Mr. Harriman returned last [evening] after killing two bears, mother and child. The color light brown allied to grizzly hind foot only 8 inches long some tracks seen 5 inches longer. A [mountaineer] came aboard this evening who was familiar with a great part of the coast from Wrangell to Oonalaska; said he was just like me, liked to go on [glaciers] and [mountains] alone. Was chased with wolves, had crossed many [glaciers], most admired the 2 in Lituya bay, they were so steep and sheer, entering the water in the [West] arm of bay and thundered so loud.
