in patches and scattered trees about half way, increasing to Eastward. All inclined to be low and brown with dense growth of last [year’s] cones. only few of patches seemed old. Arrived at Kodiak [Sketch: No 3 from Land] at 3 P.M. and took walk with [Sketch: In front of Yak Bay should be on [page] 21] [John] Burroughs a few miles into woods. Saw or heard [yellow] crowned sparrow [yellow] warbler, song sparrow, varied thrush, hermit thrush, Townsend sparrow, red poll, chickadee.
