Found a paradise of a camp on bench covered with cassiope 3 ms from head of inlet on Right side. 50 or 60 ft above sea. [Timber] ab[undant]. Made another supper at 11. Went to bed at 2. Grand exhilarating evening. Pitying those on ship 28th. Spent day in walking along shore nearly to uppermost gl. Crossed dirt gl [ ] badly. Wedge gl[acier] sends down large stream. Large rocky delta [small sketch]. had to cross. Lovely cassiope beds on logs [and] benches & surging up against stumps & trees. [Sod] of very tough & deep woody stems [firm] as [pine] less than 1/16 in[ch] dia. Each flr[flower] [ ] on its own stem lvs[leaves] all around 2 in[ches] high flrs nodding petals waxy white some pink separate, sepals red pedicel red all facing down hill 8 or 10 to sq inch each making letter S charming plant mixed with woody sax[afrage] lacerated lvs[leaves]. caltha & merryanthus with green glossy lvs Veratrum mtn [aster] 10 ft high young hemlock bronze colored vaccinium potentilla First pure forest of Paton hemlock even seen at sea level It seems old storm-beaten.
