Something soon must be done about the removal of 2nd growth and underbrush now fire is being kept out. None but those restricted in range of pasture deplore being included in park. Mr. Crocker owns ¼ section. He was told he must fence his land or keep his stock off park lands. He compromised with government - was allowed to keep 12 head without fencing, they of course feeding on his own and park lands. Appropriations required to make and repair roads and trails, soil pasturage and timber. Aug. 19 Cool calm, the pines drowsing in thickening sunshine, cones ripening fast - measured one sugar pine 11 ft dia at ground, 4 ft above and above small of base 8ft dia; trees 5 to 8 ft dia very common here. Kelog oak 350 years, 4 ft 8 in dia at crockers Sugar pine 214 years 8 ft 4 in dia at crockers 180 ft long First 100 years dia 2 ft 3” at 200 years 3-3 Sug, pine 3-6 dia age 225 Kel oak 176 years 1-10 dia inside bark Sug pine prostrate 9 ft 3, 4 ft above ground 6 ft dia at 100 ft above ground Sug pine cut for shingles 7 ft dia at stumpt 3 ft above ground 330 years old 3-3 1t 50 ft from stump 210 ft high as near as could make out - head smashed. Yellow pine 380 years 3-10 dia 180 high 2-6 at height of 100 ft. Aug. 20 Crockers- Pilealed woodpecker common rather in the deep woods about here, saw two in a yellow pine knocking off large scales of bark, and this morning heard blows from a dead tree at the side of Crockers field that sounded like those of a railsplitter. - Snow bunting black-head and tail white in middle. Yellow pine 260 years 5-1 inside barks about 174 ft high. 2 lvd pine 90 ft high 301 dia, 116 years. Aug 21. Set out for Aspen 10 miles from Crockers on Tioga road. Alt about 6000 or 6200 ...
