January Wednesday 30 1895 Another frosty morning & fine bright day, the weeds & grass in the vineyards & orchards growing fast. Joe and Scot plowing. Most of the ground too wet. A walk to Maggies my only exercise today Have been bound pretty closely to my desk wrestling with Sitadakay Wrote 11 pages. My head is heavy on top - the composition spot. Now it is 11 o clock & to bed I go. Another day gone--- Thursday 31 The brightest, balmiest best day afr [after] all the happy new Year, a true child of the sun. Hard at work on Alaska, wrote 13 pages - Scot pulling out mission vines [Tim] [Jim] pruning, Joe plowing, larks singing. Snow still lingering on Diablo Frost [in] this morning February Friday 1 1895 Weather still delightful, slight frost in the morning. Then a balmy day, sunshine & larksong in glorious measure. A petion [petition] is being circulated in favor of preservation of larks from ruthless slaughters of gunners. Larks are as characteristic of California weather as sunbeams. As well shoot the sun out of the sky. Helen is doing brave work on her journal, composition original - also the spelling. Wrote 13 pages today. Hope to finish Glacier Bay tomorrow. Saturday 2 Still lovely weather [These] day, true Sun-days are about as like each other as coins Golden coins - all gold from Dawn to twilight. Made slow progress with Glaciers - only 6 pages today & a few letters Sunday 3 Another golden day. Slight frost. Made slow progress with MS [My Sled-Trip]. Must finish tomorrow. Had a call from Prof. Allen & [Prof] Richard Gray. Mr. Gray is a grand looking man, tall well proportioned but as traffic manager for the SP RR he has been overworked & is now a wreck. Too many coffee pots and blankets on his back in making journey through the world.
