Temp. 51. Steaming N. at 6 P.M. Spoke whaler, who gave us news of the Dan Webster. She was crushed in the ice off Pt. Barrow. About half her crew have been picked up by the other whalers, the other half are still at Pt. Barrow or on their way down. We are going N. to seek them. Captain Owen sent a letter to them by an Eskimo, telling them to make large fires that might be seen by vessels off shore a few miles. Saw a star this evening – Venus or Jupiter, and the moon.
