| Summary: | Aug 7. Cloudy, with moderate breeze and glimpses of open sunshine. Walked over the peninsula, which was found to be all granite inclined to weather into bowlders around the shores. Discovered 2 small patches of glacial polish, trend of striae nearly N. & S., across the peninsula which is nearly cut off by low ground to the W. where river comes in at the head of large bay. The N. side of the peninsula is lower than the S., nearly flat on top. Found many ruins of Eskimo huts, quite ancient, most of them, the bones and timbers of the frames crumbled,. Noticed rude water ditches for supply of one group of old huts. Mr. Nelson found specimens of 6 snipes. Several new saxifrages here. Walked through the village once more. Mr. N. got photos. All seemed suspicious. The surface of the peninsula is strewn with water-worn pebbles, glacial origin- slate, lava, quartz, etc. showing that they have traveled. Calmer this eve., temp. 44o.
