The ice heavy hereabouts and much cleaner than towards Herald Island and Wrangel Land. Some of the bergs beautifully pure, lovely pale azure and green tones in the hollows. Dark clouds at 6 to 8 with rain. Beautiful sunset orange and gold about 11. The mountains back of the coast 10 to 20 miles distinctively glaciated, quite large tributary came in just to the S. of Cape N. Small residual glaciers just newly vanished, leaving plain traces. They have, however, exerted a comparatively feeble influence on the general physiognomy. Aug 5. Stiff breeze from the S.E. Black clouds, rain in short showers, ice, blue and green and hard and in heavy berg masses, not dirty and tabular and decayed like that about Wrangel Land. We reached Wankarem at 5:45 and came to anchor near the village. The cape is granite, low and overswept, showing no marked compliance to the cleavage which is well seen on the wave-weathered extremity. A number of moutoneed ridges from 40 to 500 ft. h? N.W. and S.E. from here, trending about N.W. rising from a low margin so wide could not see the mountains this rather dull day – probably 20 miles?
