A grand sail [between] ranges of rocks & mtns [mountains] reaching 2000 to 4000 ft [feet] Gray massy licheny with a rather [thin] clothing of grass heaths & bushes of birch. & willow on the less steep portions & a few pines [quite] small 79 here & there. The mtns [mountains] are mostly massive & well rounded up to 3000 or more having all been heavily overswept by the general ice mantel, & though many portions show scoring few are polished owing I suppose to constant rains or nearly so & the kind of rock. The cleavage plans nearly universally developed, & closely so rendering the granite very readily erodable by glacial action.
