Description
Summary:48 irons & returned safely after exciting chase. had a 2 miles pull. [July] 230 tourists on this ship. Many went up on the foot of the gl [glacier]. & all seemed happy & enthusiastic Though it was curious to see how promptly all or nearly all ceased their gazing at the gl [glacier] when the dinner bell rang. & How many turned from the great thundering crystal world of ice to look curiously at Inds [indians] that came along side to sell trinkets & how our camp & kitchen arrangements excited so many to loiter & waste their few hours about in prying into our poor huts. July 8th Fine, clear. Went up to gl [glacier] to observe stakes or marks on the ice for motion. Found in center 49 about 100 ft [feet] in 8 days. On the med [medial] mor [moraine], 1 m [mile] from front no appreciable motion. Making sled. July 9th Rainy. Making sled & reading. Found tomcod on shallow at mouth of creek. Raven was devouring it. York [thot] [thought] it had been wounded by seal or eagle Was still alive when found. July 10th Low barometer. Must get quite ready to start on gl [glacier] trip without much reference to weather. Yesterday eve saw large berg just as it was [detached] [from front.] Blue mostly yet it slid down from front. Two boys rowed out to it as it sailed past camp down the outlet Estimated at 240 ft [feet] long 100 ft [feet] h [high] 9 A M sprinkling https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/jmj-all/2873/thumbnail.jpg
