June 26 Fix mark on left wing to measure motion. Rain all day but moderate. Grand tramp over mud ice & rocks to the [left] E [east] wall of the M [Muir] Inlet Brown metamorphic slate close grained planes of [cleavage] & [bedding] dipping away from inlet presenting edges to ice action wh [which] has given rise to singularly beautiful & striking surface, -- polised [polished] & grooved & fluted Sketch: vert [vertical] section at right angles to trend of Inlet [23] [Sketch:] made cabin thus Stormy night feared blowing away tent June 27th Rain all day rather dull Mtns [mountains] smothered in fog [clad]. The great gl [glacier] wall looming thro [through] the gray fog fingers. Thunder of bergs more impressive Fear bad weather for exploring. June 28. Rain light. Visited by 2 parties of Ind [indians]. [One landed] A man from each [&] came ashore to see us leaving the women in canoes to guard against berg [wakes] Tried my chinook -- made [out] to say I wanted to hire two of them in a few days to go on gl [glacier] & around bay. They are hunting seal.
