Merchants will give ""one of a certain volume of the work, free, when a customer purchases $1.00 worth of goods from him for cash."" Twelve San Francisco merchants are listed; available from each are three different issues. The notice indicates that 36 parts would be available; however, not more than 32 were printed. Title page and ""Contents"" were issued with Part 32. Muir's contributions are: I. ""Peaks and Glaciers of the High Sierra,"" pp. [1]-22; 2. ""The Passes of the High Sierra,"" pp. [23]-46; 3.
