As a steamer arrived from 1500 miles up the Yukon ""towing three large boats laden with Indians and traders with last year's collection of furs,"" Muir watched the wild scene: squaws setting up tents, children playing with barking dogs, and the men forming ""a busy train of coming and going between the warehouse and the boats, storing the bundles of shaggy bear-skins . martin, mink, fox, beaver, otter, lynx, moose, wolf and wolverine, many of them with claws spread and hair on end, as if still fighting for life, vividly suggestive of the far wilderness whence they came .
