The learning experience for senior students took in investigating the effects of natural processes on the landscape comparison with those resulting from mining and exploration activities. The field excursion began in Christchurch, with 11 days in the South Island and 6 the North Island. All major geologic terranes were covered, with highlights being visits to three operating mines, the Southern Alps and volcanic areas. On the North Island, a trip to the active White Island volcano in the Bay of Plenty was instructive.
