A native of Hatton, North Dakota, Carl Ben Eielson graduated from UND in 1921. This photograph was taken in 1928 and depicts Mrs. Harold McCue, Eielson, and an unidentified woman (left to right). The photograph was taken in front of an airplane with an advertisement reading "Richfield Gasoline of Power" on the nose. Known as the "Father of Aviation in Alaska," Eielson piloted the first airmail route there in 1924 and was the first person to fly over the North Pole in 1928.
