The actual periglacial dynamics in an atlantic high mountain environment: Oppland and Sor-Trondelag National Parks, central Norway

The norwegian massifs of Dovrefjell and Rondane belong to the Scandes and are among its highest summits. In accordance with their distance to the sea and with the proximity of the Arctic Circle, they represent a climatic transition location characterized at the same time by oceanic, polar and contin...

In accordance with their distance to the sea and with the proximity of the Arctic Circle, they represent a climatic transition location characterized at the same time by oceanic, polar and continental influences. This climate is favourable for periglacial dynamics. The quartzitic structure of the massifs is particularly convenient to frost action in soils and rocks. For these two reasons, they have one of the thickest active periglacial belt of Europe which occures from 900-950 m a.s.l. up to the summits. By using the observation of functional periglacial features, the first aim of this work is to provide elements for the delimitation of this belt. Added to the exceptional legibility of the functional periglacial belt of the massifs is also their sensitivity to climate fluctuations. The second aim of this study is to emphasize the mobility of the active periglacial belt since the end of the Little Ice Age. At the present time, this mobility associates reconquest dynamics on glacial margins and dynamics of decay within the functional periglacial belt. Both massifs are also National parks since several decades. Thus, the last aim of this work is to extract geomorphic informations from this research that can be transmitted to the public by a popularization method. Thus, this work gives a new example of applied search.
