This book studies the relationship between technological innovation and industrial property in France, one of the first nations to adopt a modern legislation on patents. This study, focused on practices, analyses the role of the individual inventor, who is a familiar character of our collective imagination and a key actor of technological change in the nineteenth century. It also sheds light on the social dimension of inventive activity by describing its institutions: technical reviews, corporations and industrial exhibitions are stakeholders of technical progress. Finally, this book aims to think the slow emergence of industrial research in big French firms from the early twentieth century, whereas the French patent system is still based on individual and democratic values in phase with the ideal of a Republic of inventors. L'innovation tient lieu aujourd'hui d'impératif catégorique et son développement s'accompagne d'un renforcement des droits de la propriété intellectuelle. Les problèmes posés par la brevetabilité du vivant ou du logiciel, les controverses autour du droit d'auteur ou la lutte contre la contrefaçon sont autant de signes de l'importance prise par ces formes d'appropriation. Éclairer ces enjeux grâce à une enquête historique, telle est l'ambition de cet ouvrage qui analyse les rapports entre l'innovation technique et la propriété industrielle en France, l'une des premières nations à se doter d'une législation moderne sur les brevets d'invention. Cette étude, centrée sur les pratiques et sur les usages, revient sur le rôle de l'inventeur individuel, figure familière de notre imaginaire collectif et acteur fondamental du changement technique au XIXe siècle. Elle éclaire également la dimension sociale de l'activité inventive en décrivant le jeu de ses institutions : revues techniques, sociétés et expositions industrielles sont alors parties prenantes du progrès technique.
