Det mangler fortsatt grunnleggende kunnskap om viruset og sykdommen det forårsaker, og rutiner til å kunne takle sykdomsutbrudd i oppdrettsnæringen på best mulig måte. Hovedmålet med denne oppgaven var derfor å øke kunnskapen om viruset og sykdomsforløpet hos laksen. Dette ble undersøkt i sammenheng med stress fordi dette reduserer laksens motstandskraft. Oppgaven baserte seg på et smitteforsøk med to grupper SGPV-smittet laks, der den ene gruppen i tillegg ble injisert med hydrokortison for å få økt kortisol i blodet. Genekspresjon av viruset og laksen ble målt ved bruk av RT-qPCR og kvalitativ deteksjon av virusinfiserte celler ble detektert ved bruk av in situ hybridisering. I tillegg ble funksjonelle domener i hypotetiske SGPV-proteiner funnet ved bruk av bioinformatiske verktøy. Salmon Gill Poxvirus Disease (SGPVD) is a gill disease associated with high mortality in the aquaculture industry and considered as a threat to fish welfare. More basic knowledge on the virus and the disease it causes is needed to be able to cope with disease outbreaks in the aquaculture industry. The main aim of this study was to increase the knowledge about the virus and the salmon response to infection. This was studied in the context of stress, because stress is known to reduce the disease resistence. The thesis were based on a challenge trial with two groups of SGPV-infected salmon, in which one group was also injected with hydrocortisone to increase the cortisol level in the blood. Gene expression from the virus and the salmon was measured using RT-qPCR, and virus-infected cells were detected using in situ hybridization.
