Forecasts for the future say that there will be more rainfall and more intense rainfall events. Since the drainage system and waterways need time to take care of the water safely, intense precipitation events will lead to increased likelihood of flooding. The future challenges with handling surface water are mainly due to climate change, population growth and urbanization. Global climate change is a fact and one must be prepared. The UN Climate Panel has used a lot of resources to figure out how the future looks by looking at historical data and climate history. They have formulated several emission scenarios 'Representative Concentration Pathways' (RCPs) to get a better understanding of how the climate will change. Even with several different RCPs, there is still a lot of uncertainties. Norway gets more rainfall and more rainfall with high intensity. Norway is a country with a small population, and the proportion of the population living in urban areas increases. This increase is pushing existing infrastructure. Development in the urban areas leads to more impermeable surfaces, as well as more expensive rehabilitation and expansion of the pipeline. This master's thesis deals with surface water management principles. Based on these principles, its expressed goals that the Bodø municipality can strive to achieve. Achieving these goals will ensure control over surface. As well as the reduction of water that reaches the treatment plant. The following principles are recommended for Bodø municipality: - “3 – ledd strategien” o Infiltration and reduction of surface runoff o Surface water delay o Save floodwater paths - Climate factor 1.5 - Using surface water as a resource Implementing measures that prevent floods in residential areas due to poor capacity in the drainage pipeline and identifying paths flood water takes are important goals. One of the more effective measures to achieve this would be to disconnect roof drains from the pipeline to reduce shock loading it. Another ...
