Zagotavljanje psihosocialne pomoči policistom

Vsakodnevni pritiski sodobnega načina življenja, ki so posledica hitrega življenjskega ritma, izpostavljajo ljudi stresnim situacijam. Posledice so večinoma negativne, zato se jim človeški organizem poskuša upreti oziroma ustvariti obrambo pred nezaželenimi vplivi iz okolice. Človek je pod vplivom s...

description Vsakodnevni pritiski sodobnega načina življenja, ki so posledica hitrega življenjskega ritma, izpostavljajo ljudi stresnim situacijam. Everyday pressures of the modern and rapid pace of life put people into stressful situations. The consequences are primarily negative, so the human organism tries hard to fight them with a defence mechanism to protect itself from unwanted outside influences. A person is under stress when he realizes that he cannot handle a new situation. Since the police are human beings, the outside influences they face are no different from those faced by other mortals. Even though policemen and policewomen are perceived as people with a “thicker skin” who are supposedly less affected by stressful situations because they had willingly chosen such a profession, they are not supposed to complain about the stressfulness of their occupation or be able to find a way out of a difficult situation by themselves. The work of police officers is very different from most occupations. It is a job performed in a uniform and the person is under various physical and mental pressures while also facing different health and life problems. This thesis focuses on psychosocial help provided to police officers by the police organisation as well as on the individual, who has to be aware of the existence of stress in order to be able to recognize it and deal with it correctly. The introductory part takes the layman reader through the police occupation, the legal basis of police authorisation and different forms of police work. Moreover, the topic is (particularly) suitable for police officers (as well as other “intervention” occupations) because it discusses stressful situations, defines stress and its various types and explains the consequences it has on police officers. Furthermore, it focuses on individual handling of stress and continues with mental health help provided by the employer – the police. The conclusion involves definitions of the given hypotheses and gives advice to police officers. The main message is that even with good organisation and support from their employer they have to be active in this field and seek help, if necessary.
