Stari ljudje želijo ostati doma, v okolju, ki ga poznajo, kjer imajo vzpostavljene socialne mreže, v družbi ljudi različnih generacij in so vpeti v širšo skupnost. So v dobri fizični kondiciji. The number of elderly people is rising from year to year and there is a substantial increase in the portion of population that is over 80 years old. Old people wish to stay at home, in the environment they know and where they have established a social network, in the company of people of different generations and connected with wider community. In this graduation thesis we have presented aging and elderly person, the characteristics of aging and most common needs that emerge in the older age. We have represented professions that care for elderly people in their home environment and described self-support of elderly people. We listed the types of adaptations for elderly persons. We also described the relationship between elderly person and his family and represented the issue of loneliness in elderly people. Methodology of research: We used the descriptive method of research. We obtained our data with the help of anonymous questionnaire. There were 30 elderly people from municipality of Podlehnik included in our research. Results of the research: The results have shown that almost all elderly people in the municipality of Podlehnik live at home, with their partners or relatives, some of them however, live completely alone. Most of them take care for themselves and they are in good physical condition. Most of them have good living conditions and most of them occasionally feel lonely. The research have also shown that services, designed for helping elderly people at home, do not visit elderly people in the municipality of Podlehnik. Despite the troubles they encountered at home, none of the elderly persons wish to go to the retirement home. Conclusion: In the rural area, a lot of elderly people feel lonely and isolated. We should establish support groups that would organize meetings for elderly people, so they could socialize more. People would be able to connect with each other, show greater attention to the elderly, devote more time to them and socialize with them more.
