Theoretical basis: Aging is not a disease, it is a natural and inevitable process. With aging, older people are losing their physical and mental abilities. They are confronted with many changes of aging. Those are biological or physical changes, mental changes and social changes of aging. Elderly who are able to care for themselves, stay at home. When they are no longer able to care for themselves, majority of them decide for residential care. The purpose of thesis is to highlight the most common changes in individuals aging and the usual reasons for their decision to go in residential care. With this research we would like to determine whether the elderly are already thinking about residential care and in which case will they decide to chose it. Methodology: We used the survey method, the method of compilation and descriptive method. We used Slovenian, foreign and scientific professional literature. Results: 57 % of respondents would decide for the residential care, if they were left without their families. For 80 % of respondents, the biggest obstacle for decision to go to the institutional care, represents the expensive cost of living in residential settings and for 33 % of respondents, an obstacle represents long distance from their families. Resolution: In Slovenia and all around the world, the population is aging intensively, resulting demographic changes. This is related to an aging population and an organization that takes care for elderly. It is important to ensure the quality of age to elderly at home environment or in residential care. When there is deterioration in health and functional status of eldery, the interest in residential care increases, since there are no more possibilities for elderly to live in the home environment.
