Le thème de la nordicité est une représentation géographique mythique au Canada, tant chez les anglophones que chez les francophones. Ce mythe fondateur met l'accent, chez les premiers, sur l'immensité des espaces naturels, sur la lutte avec la Nature, tandis que les francophones y ont vu la Terre Promise qui leur permettait une revanche géographique pour leurs échecs politiques. L'existence même de ce mythe peut surprendre, étant donné le peu d'empressement d'Ottawa à contrôler les immenses espaces que Londres lui avait cédés, afin de tenter d'en préserver la souveraineté impériale face aux Américains. Mais justement, cet aspect géopolitique ne rejoint-il pas le contenu investi aujourd'hui par les Canadiens dans le mythe du Nord, à savoir l'histoire d'une lutte ? The theme of nordicity is a mythical geographic image in Canada, whether it be among English or French speaking Canada. In the English part, the myth stresses the vastness of Nature, the fight against Nature, whereas French-Canadians saw in it the Promised Land that could enable them to take a geographic revenge after the failure of their political struggles. The very existence of this myth may be surprising, for Ottawa was in no hurry to take control of these immense territories that London had given to Canada, in an attempt to preserve the Imperial sovereignty against a potentially expansionnist United States. But would not this geopolitical aspect meet the very meaning that, for Canadians, is now embodied in their North, the history of a struggle ?
